The Management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has refuted reports claiming that a hundred corps members have been withdrawn as ad-hoc staff in Imo State. This clarification was provided in a statement signed by Eddy Megwa, the Director of Press and Public Relations for the NYSC, who labeled the circulating news as “misleading information.” Megwa emphasized that the existing Memorandum of Understanding between the NYSC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) remains intact and is progressing as planned.

The statement addressed concerns regarding the alleged withdrawal of corps members from participating in the upcoming Presidential and National Assembly elections in three local government areas of Imo State. Megwa reiterated that the NYSC fully supports the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections across Nigeria. He assured that all trained corps members in every state are prepared for the general elections.

Furthermore, the NYSC clarified that while it does not oppose the participation of corps members in the elections, it will refrain from assigning them to areas identified as flashpoints due to security concerns. The management urged the public to disregard the misleading information, which it believes aims to tarnish the reputation of the NYSC.

Megwa stated, “We want to categorically affirm that corps members are not withdrawn from participating in the elections in certain local government areas in Imo State. Instead, we are cautious about posting corps members to locations deemed unsafe due to insecurity.” He noted that specific local government areas in Imo State have been classified as flashpoints, and as a result, corps members cannot be deployed to serve as INEC ad-hoc staff in those regions. The NYSC has communicated this position clearly to the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Imo State.

In conclusion, the NYSC management calls on the public to dismiss the misleading and unfounded online claims that seek to undermine the integrity and image of the Scheme.
