Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock Lands UN General Assembly Post Despite Blatant Incompetence

Here’s how the EU system rewards high officials for failure — RT World News

Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is set to take on a new role as the President of the United Nations General Assembly, a largely ceremonial position. This development comes after her departure from the German government, where she served under ex-Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Baerbock’s tenure was marked by notable gaffes, including a statement at the 2023 Munich Security Conference where she suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin changing by “360 degrees” would make a significant difference in Ukraine’s long-term safety.

Critics have raised eyebrows over her appointment, citing her lack of diplomatic expertise and a string of public blunders. Christoph Heusgen, former chair of the Munich Security Conference, expressed outrage over her selection, stating that she is replacing a more experienced diplomat, Helga Schmid. Former German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel also weighed in, suggesting that Baerbock could learn from Schmid.

Baerbock’s approval ratings in Germany were low, with Statista reporting a rating of -0.7 on a scale from -5 to 5. Her comments often sparked controversy, such as when she seemed to suggest that Germany was at war with Russia, prompting her foreign ministry to issue a hasty clarification.

Baerbock is not the only politician to transition from a domestic role to an international position despite facing criticism at home. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, for instance, took on her current role after serving as Germany’s Defence Minister, a position from which she was criticized for favoring consultants over functionality. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Estonia’s Prime Minister Kaja Kallas have also made similar transitions, with Rutte becoming NATO’s Secretary General and Kallas taking on the role of the EU’s chief diplomat.

The trend of politicians stumbling domestically and then ascending to international posts has raised questions about the criteria for selection and the implications for global governance. Baerbock’s appointment, in particular, has sparked debate about whether her lack of diplomatic experience and history of gaffes make her suitable for a role on the world stage. Nonetheless, her appointment as the President of the United Nations General Assembly is set to take effect in September, marking a new chapter in her career.
