Breaking News: Sista Becky Partners with UN World Food Programme to Combat Hunger in DRC
In a groundbreaking move, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has announced its partnership with rising Congolese music star Sista Becky, also known as Rebecca Kalonji, as a High-Level Supporter. This collaboration aims to advocate for nutrition and healthy eating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where a staggering 28 million people face severe hunger and 4.75 million children suffer from acute malnutrition.
Sista Becky, known for her socially conscious lyrics, is gaining international recognition in the music scene. Her debut single "Mr Rap" launched her career in 2016, and her album "Apéritif" (2021) solidified her position as a leading artist in Congolese music. With her recent release of "Kimpa vita," she continues to use her voice as a catalyst for social change in the DRC. As a High-Level Supporter, Sista Becky joins fellow artists Innoss’B and Distel Zola in furthering WFP’s mission to promote school feeding, support healthy foods, and prevent malnutrition across the country.
"I want to challenge young people to not only raise their voices but also to take action on the issues that directly impact their future, including access to nutritious food and better opportunities for women and girls," Sista Becky emphasized. Her influence and dedication to social issues align perfectly with WFP’s objectives, making her a valuable partner in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.
The partnership comes at a critical time, as WFP faces severe funding shortfalls. The organization needs US$433 million over the next six months to meet the growing humanitarian needs in the DRC. Elvira Pruscini, WFP’s Representative and Country Director a.i. in DRC, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "We are thrilled to have Sista Becky join us in our mission to combat hunger and promote nutrition in DRC. Her influence and dedication to social issues align perfectly with WFP’s objectives, and we look forward to the impact we can achieve together."
As the world’s largest humanitarian organization, WFP plays a vital role in saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability, and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters, and the impact of climate change. With Sista Becky on board, the organization is poised to make a significant impact in the DRC, inspiring young people to take action against food insecurity and participate in community development.
This partnership serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of collaboration and collective action in addressing the pressing issues of our time. As Sista Becky’s voice continues to inspire and mobilize young people, it is clear that together, we can make a difference and create a brighter future for all.
