Nigeria is gearing up for a nationwide Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign in October 2025, and the Federal Government has pledged its full support. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this commitment during a meeting with the Centre for Well-Being and Integrated Nutrition Solutions (C-WINS). The ministry’s goal is to ensure that all Nigerians are well-informed about the dangers of Rubella and the importance of vaccination.

Idris emphasized the ministry’s readiness to work with relevant agencies to amplify the campaign’s message and support public education efforts nationwide. He also encouraged the team to engage with the National Assembly to secure broader legislative support. “Prevention is better than cure, and this is one area where information truly saves lives,” he said.

The delegation from C-WINS, led by Project Lead Dr. Nihinlola Mabogunje, briefed the Minister on the urgent need to raise public awareness about the campaign. Mabogunje delivered a comprehensive presentation on the life-saving importance of the Measles-Rubella vaccine, highlighting its safety and effectiveness. She explained that contracting rubella in the first trimester can result in Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS), leading to severe birth defects.

Mabogunje assured the Minister that the Measles-Rubella vaccine has been used worldwide for over 50 years and has saved more than 94 million lives. She commended the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for its stringent regulatory review and endorsement of the vaccine for safe use in Nigeria. To reach the target of 95 percent vaccination coverage, Mabogunje urged the Ministry to lead a national communication effort to combat misinformation and build public trust.

The Minister’s commitment to supporting the vaccination campaign is a significant step towards preventing the devastating effects of Rubella. By working together, the government, healthcare professionals, and the public can ensure that all Nigerians, especially pregnant women, are protected from this often-overlooked threat. With accurate, trusted, and consistent messaging, Nigeria can make significant strides in preventing the spread of Measles-Rubella and promoting public health.
