The Nigerian Bar Association has paid tribute to the late Mohammed Uwais, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, describing him as a champion of electoral reform and a pillar of integrity in the country’s judiciary. In a statement issued in Lagos, the association’s President and Secretary, Afam Osigwe and Mobolaji Ojibara, jointly expressed their condolences on the passing of Justice Uwais, who they said left a huge vacuum in the nation’s judicial system.

Justice Uwais was a highly respected figure in Nigeria’s legal community, known for his exceptional intellectual depth and his commitment to upholding democratic principles. During his tenure as Chief Justice from 1995 to 2006, he delivered several landmark judgments that significantly advanced constitutional interpretation and civil liberties in Nigeria. As the second longest-serving Chief Justice, he was a staunch advocate of judicial independence and ethical discipline on the bench.

The Nigerian Bar Association noted that Justice Uwais continued to serve with distinction even in retirement, chairing the Electoral Reform Committee in 2007 and proposing far-reaching recommendations. His legacy, according to the association, is one of legal brilliance, public service, moral discipline, and visionary leadership. Justice Uwais leaves behind an indelible imprint on Nigeria’s national conscience, the legal profession, and the system of justice.

Born on June 12, 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Justice Uwais was widely respected for his steadfast commitment to judicial reforms and the protection of judicial independence during his tenure. The Nigerian Bar Association has extended its heartfelt condolences to the Uwais family, the Nigerian Judiciary, and the entire legal community, mourning the loss of a remarkable jurist who dedicated his life to serving the nation with integrity and distinction.

Justice Uwais’s contributions to Nigeria’s judicial system and electoral reform will be remembered for generations to come. His passing is a significant loss to the country, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide those who follow in his footsteps. As the Nigerian Bar Association and the entire legal community mourn his passing, they also celebrate his life and achievements, honoring a man who embodied the values of justice, integrity, and public service.
