Diphtheria Outbreak in Edo State: Vaccines Supplied Amid Rising Concerns

A recent surge in diphtheria cases in Edo State, Nigeria, has prompted swift action from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Delta State Government, with the supply of vaccines to combat the highly infectious disease. The outbreak has already claimed two lives out of five diagnosed cases, with the Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, expressing concern over the disease’s unexpected spread.

According to Dr. Oshiomhole, the NCDC provided 70 doses of anti-diphtheria vaccine, while the Delta State Ministry of Health contributed 20 doses to the Edo State Government. The commissioner noted that some individuals who have been fully vaccinated are still being infected, including those above the age of five, who are not typically expected to contract the disease. This unusual trend has led to concerns about the potential need to immunize adults, including health workers.

The Edo State Government has taken proactive steps to address the outbreak, with Governor Monday Okpebholo approving the donation of beds, fittings, and other essential items to the emergency centre at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). The governor may also cover the medical expenses of affected patients.

Professor Stanley Okugbo, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at UBTH, commended the state government’s swift response in providing vaccines. He confirmed that all diphtheria patients are responding to treatment and urged the public to report symptoms early to health facilities. Professor Okugbo emphasized that diphtheria is best prevented through vaccination and proper hygiene, highlighting the importance of washing hands with soap and clean running water to prevent infection.

As the situation continues to unfold, health officials are working tirelessly to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread. The public is advised to be vigilant and report any symptoms, including thick, grey membranes covering the throat and tonsils, sore throat and hoarseness, swollen glands in the neck, difficulty or rapid breathing, nasal discharge, fever, chills, and fatigue.

The collaborative efforts of the NCDC, Delta State Government, and Edo State Government demonstrate a commitment to addressing the diphtheria outbreak and protecting public health. As the situation develops, it is essential for individuals to remain informed and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the disease. By working together, we can mitigate the impact of this outbreak and ensure the well-being of communities in Edo State and beyond.
