The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the Nigerian government’s handling of international relations, arguing that the country’s regional and global influence has waned under the current administration. The opposition pointed to recent incidents—such as the detention of Nigerian Air Force personnel and their aircraft in Burkina Faso—as evidence of Nigeria’s declining standing on the world stage.

The PDP also expressed concern over the partial travel ban imposed by the United States on Nigeria, describing it as a significant setback for the nation’s foreign relations. The ban, which affects both immigrant and non‑immigrant visas, is reportedly linked to rising insecurity and the government’s perceived inability to address the situation effectively. The party noted that even during periods of military rule, Nigerians were not subjected to such harsh treatment.

According to the PDP, the government’s response to security challenges has been inadequate, relying on simplistic solutions and politicising security matters. The controversy surrounding the promotion of the President’s aide‑de‑camp and other presidential security aides was cited as an example of this approach.

The party also highlighted the Global Firepower 2024 report, which placed Nigeria 39th in military capacity, down from 36th in 2023. This decline, the PDP argued, underscores the need for effective governance and a comprehensive strategy to address security issues.

The PDP’s criticism comes amid growing worries about Nigeria’s international reputation and its ability to maintain positive relations with other nations. As the country confronts these challenges, the government’s response to the opposition’s concerns and its plans to restore Nigeria’s global influence remain to be seen. The incident has reignited debate over the need for improved leadership and a more effective approach to international relations in Nigeria.
