According to Araghchi, Iran maintains a firm conviction not to possess a nuclear weapon, but emphasizes that no country has the right to deprive Iran of its right to a peaceful nuclear program. “Those who are willing to deprive Iran of our right to possess the nuclear program for peaceful purposes, they have no right to do so,” he noted. The minister also expressed his belief that a breakthrough could have been achieved during the canceled talks, stating that the previous round of discussions had seen the Americans present proposals that were not entirely acceptable to Iran. However, he claimed that Iran’s counter-proposal could have paved the way for a comprehensive agreement with the US.
The exchange of strikes between Iran and Israel has resulted in significant damage and loss of life. At least 10 people were reportedly killed and around 200 wounded in the attacks, which saw Iran launch ballistic missiles at targets in Israel, including the country’s largest city, Tel Aviv. US President Donald Trump has urged Tehran to return to diplomacy, insisting that Washington had no involvement in the Israeli attack on Iran. However, Araghchi has stressed that Tehran does not believe the US claims, stating that they have evidence to the contrary.
