Brittney Griner Clears the Air: "No Place for Racism in the League"

In a recent interview, Atlanta Dream star Brittney Griner addressed a viral clip that appeared to show her making a racial remark towards Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark. The incident occurred during a game on May 23, where the Dream lost 81-76. Griner spent 25 minutes on the court, recording five points and seven rebounds before fouling out.

When asked by Outkick reporter Dan Zaksheske about the alleged comment, Griner denied making any racist remarks. "No, I would never say that. Like, there’s no place for that in the league," she stated. Despite not remembering her exact words, Griner is confident that she did not use racist language. "I know it wasn’t that because I wouldn’t use that type of language," she emphasized.

Griner’s denial comes as she continues to make headlines in her 13th season in the WNBA. With nine appearances for the Atlanta Dream, she averages 11.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game. Although she has struggled to find her form, the Dream is performing well, holding the third seed in the standings with an 8-3 record.

The team’s recent success includes a three-game winning streak, with victories over the Chicago Sky, Indiana Fever, and Washington Mystics. Griner’s achievements extend beyond her current season, with a stellar career marked by six All-WNBA team selections, seven WNBA All-Defensive team nods, and two Defensive Player of the Year awards.

In a separate ceremony, Griner was honored with a championship ring for her role in Team USA’s gold medal win at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. As a three-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Griner’s dedication to the sport and her commitment to excellence are undeniable.

The Atlanta Dream will face the New York Liberty at the Barclays Center on Tuesday, with Griner and her teammates looking to continue their winning streak. As the WNBA season unfolds, Griner’s focus on the game and her passion for promoting a positive, inclusive environment will undoubtedly remain in the spotlight.
