Christmas: Atiku, El-Rufai urge Nigerians to embrace unity

Nigerian leaders are urging unity and reflection as the country joins the global community in celebrating Christmas 2025. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El‑Rufai each issued messages on Thursday emphasizing the importance of coming together during the festive season.

Atiku Abubakar, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, addressed Christian Nigerians and described Christmas as a reminder of love, sacrifice, forgiveness and compassion. He called on citizens to rise above division, heal old wounds and recommit to the nation’s common destiny. Atiku also urged Nigerians to use the season for quiet reflection and prayer, seeking divine guidance for peace, justice and renewed hope for the country.

Similarly, Nasir El‑Rufai encouraged Nigerians to celebrate the holidays by embracing the values that bind the nation together as one people under God. He wished everyone a Merry Christmas and happy holidays, stressing the need for national unity during this period.

These messages arrive as Nigeria observes a time traditionally associated with reflection, family reunions and calls for national cohesion. The Christmas celebrations provide an opportunity for Nigerians to contemplate the country’s challenges and work toward a more united and peaceful future. As the nation looks ahead, the appeals from Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El‑Rufai underscore the importance of shared values, understanding and cooperation in building a prosperous, harmonious Nigeria.
