South Africa Grapples with Rising Measles Cases and School Violence
A concerning trend is emerging in South Africa’s Gauteng province, where a surge in measles cases has prompted a vaccination campaign. According to the Gauteng Department of Health, 181 confirmed infections have been reported since the start of the year, with most cases concentrated in Tshwane, particularly in the areas of Mamelodi and Winterveld. This outbreak has exposed a worrying immunity gap, especially among children who are either not fully vaccinated or have never received the measles or rubella vaccine.
Gauteng Health spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba, emphasized the need for urgent action, stating that the department has launched a vaccination campaign, including inter-facility immunization, to offer measles-rubella booster doses to all age groups, regardless of their vaccination history. This proactive approach aims to curb the spread of the disease and protect vulnerable communities.
In a separate incident, a tragic event has shaken the community in Pretoria East, where a Grade 11 learner was stabbed and killed by a schoolmate outside Lesedi Secondary School. The attacker, a matric pupil, had not attended school that day but waited for the victim at the gate. The police are currently investigating the incident, which has raised concerns about school safety and the well-being of students.
Meanwhile, the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) is pursuing a new extradition application to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the Gupta brothers, who are wanted for additional State capture matters. Despite previous failed attempts, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) remains committed to justice, with IDAC head Andrea Johnson emphasizing that the NPA will not give up on bringing the Gupta brothers to account.
