Thibaut Courtois Says Real Madrid Still Playing Carlo Ancelotti Style Football Under Xabi Alonso

Thibaut Courtois, the seasoned goalkeeper of Real Madrid, has come forward with a candid assessment of the team’s current situation under new manager Xabi Alonso. Following a 1-1 draw against Al Hilal in the FIFA Club World Cup on Wednesday night, Courtois emphasized that the team is still adhering to the football philosophy of former manager Carlo Ancelotti. This comes after Alonso’s recent appointment, who took over the reins from Ancelotti after the Italian’s departure to become the head coach of the Brazilian national team.

The transition has been swift, with Alonso managing the team for only a few days and facing a baptism by fire in his debut game against Al Hilal, which ended in a draw. Courtois highlighted the challenges of altering the team’s playing style in such a short span, stating that the habits formed under Ancelotti’s four-year tenure cannot be easily changed. “We are still playing Ancelotti-type football. That can’t change in only 4 days,” he noted in an interview with Madrid Zone.

The goalkeeper’s comments underscore the significant influence Ancelotti had on the team during his time at the helm. With four years of playing under his guidance, the team has developed certain habits and strategies that are difficult to overhaul in a matter of days. Courtois acknowledged that Alonso has introduced new ideas, particularly in defense and attack, but emphasized that adapting to these changes will take time.

Despite the initial draw, Courtois remains optimistic about the team’s prospects under Alonso’s leadership. He mentioned that the team is engaging in extensive video analysis and discussions to learn from their performance and implement the new manager’s vision. “We are watching videos and talking a lot. We will learn from this game,” he said, conveying a sense of determination and commitment to improvement.

As Real Madrid navigates this period of transition, the comments from Courtois offer a glimpse into the team’s mindset and the challenges they face in adapting to a new manager’s approach. With time, it will be interesting to see how the team evolves and whether they can successfully integrate Alonso’s tactics into their gameplay. For now, the focus remains on learning from their experiences and moving forward with a renewed sense of purpose.
