US Businesses Eye Return to Russian Market Amid Renewed Dialogue Hopes

US companies want to return to Russia – lobby chief — RT Business News

American businesses are eager to revisit the Russian market, with the majority viewing it as a strategic location for growth. According to Robert Agee, the head of the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia (AmCham), many US companies are welcoming the Trump administration’s efforts to rekindle dialogue with Moscow. The AmCham has been a strong supporter of President Donald Trump’s attempts to restore relations with Russia since he took office in January.

Agee emphasized the importance of good business relations between Russia and the US, stating that “70% of our businesses four years ago looked upon Russia as a strategic market.” He also highlighted the success of companies that remained in Russia despite the sanctions imposed by the US and its allies over Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. “Consumer good companies, confectionary producers, pharmaceutical and medical equipment suppliers… all those companies have stayed, and they’re very active and they’re very successful,” he noted.

Those companies that left Russia are now “watching and waiting,” hoping for a thaw in US-Russia relations. Agee believes that a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin could pave the way for some companies to return to the Russian market. Putin himself has expressed “cautious optimism” about the renewed contacts between Russian and American companies, and hopes that Trump will assess US policies towards Russia from a business perspective, taking into account the costs and benefits of various approaches.

The Russian parliament is also set to pass legislation that would regulate the right of foreign companies to reclaim assets sold during their exit from the country. The bill would allow authorities or current owners of the assets to reject buybacks under certain conditions. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how US businesses will respond to the potential opportunities in the Russian market. One thing is clear, however: many American companies are eager to reestablish a presence in Russia and capitalize on the country’s strategic importance.
