Renowned Nigerian singer, Tiwa Savage, has opened up about the impact of pregnancy on her vocal range. The songstress shared her experience on Afrobeats Intelligence, highlighting the challenges she faced while recording her album ‘R.E.D’ during pregnancy. According to Savage, her condition affected her ability to hit certain notes, forcing her to adjust the keys of some songs in the album.
Savage’s journey to creating ‘R.E.D’ was not an easy one, as she found herself in the studio, struggling to record with a “big belly” and frequently breaking down in tears. Despite these challenges, she persevered, making necessary changes to accommodate her changing voice. “I changed the key of some of the songs in the album because being pregnant affected how I could hit some notes,” she explained.
As the first artist to become a mother while signed to Mavin Records, Savage received special support from her team, particularly Don Jazzy. Whenever her energy levels dipped, Jazzy would ensure that her cravings, which included eggs and bread, were fulfilled. This thoughtful gesture helped her power through the recording process.
Tiwa Savage’s career has spanned several years, with notable milestones including her joining Mavin Records in 2012 and later exiting to join Universal Music Group in 2019. Her story serves as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of artists, particularly women, who balance their creative pursuits with personal responsibilities like motherhood. By sharing her experience, Savage offers a glimpse into the often-hidden aspects of an artist’s life, highlighting the challenges and triumphs that come with pursuing a passion while navigating significant life changes.
