PDP Chairman Disowns Comment on Party’s Obligation to Inform INEC Ahead of NEC Meeting

Damagum disowns Ologunagba over comments on NEC meeting, INEC — Daily Nigerian

A recent controversy has erupted within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria, as the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, has publicly disavowed comments made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba. The dispute centers around the PDP’s obligations to inform the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about its regular meetings, including the upcoming 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for June 30.

At a news conference, Ologunagba stated that the PDP was not required to notify INEC about its regular meetings, sparking a swift response from Damagum. In a personally signed statement, Damagum described Ologunagba’s comments as unauthorized and emphasized that they did not reflect the official position of the PDP. Damagum expressed surprise and disappointment that such a sensitive matter was addressed publicly without proper internal consultation or approval from the party’s leadership.

The acting chairman clarified that the PDP remains committed to defending its internal autonomy while adhering to democratic norms and due process. He announced that a meeting would be held with INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu to address concerns raised in a letter sent to the party. Damagum stressed that the PDP’s strength lies in its unity, discipline, and adherence to established processes, rather than personal posturing.

The controversy began when the PDP invited INEC to its 100th NEC meeting, but the electoral commission replied that the invitation did not comply with regulatory requirements. According to INEC, both the national chairman and national secretary of the party must jointly sign notices for conventions, congresses, or meetings and submit them to the commission. Ologunagba later acknowledged that his comments were premature and made without due consultation, especially given that a meeting had already been scheduled with INEC for June 24.

The PDP has assured its members and the public that it is committed to resolving internal issues in a responsible and transparent manner. As the party prepares for its 100th NEC meeting, it must navigate the complexities of its relationship with INEC while maintaining its internal autonomy and adhering to democratic principles. The outcome of this situation will be closely watched, as it may have significant implications for the PDP’s future and the broader Nigerian political landscape.
