Police detain 3 masqueraders in Nsukka for allegedly assaulting residents — Daily Nigerian

In a swift response to a disturbing incident, the police command in Enugu State, Nigeria, has arrested three masqueraders accused of assaulting innocent citizens during a cultural celebration. The incident, which took place in the Nsukka area, was captured in a viral video and sparked widespread outrage.

According to SP Daniel Ndukwe, the command’s spokesman, the suspects were arrested on June 23 at 3:30 p.m. with the help of community members. The arrest was made in connection with the alleged physical assault of citizens by the ‘Oriokpa’ Masquerade group on June 22. The suspects, along with others still at large, allegedly took advantage of the celebration to attack several people, leaving some with serious injuries. One of the victims was hospitalized for treatment.

The masqueraders initially resisted arrest and fled the scene, but with the assistance of law-abiding community members, the three suspects were later identified and apprehended. The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mamman Giwa, has ordered a thorough investigation into the case to ensure that justice is served.

Commissioner Giwa emphasized that masquerade celebrations are a sacred and symbolic aspect of the nation’s culture, but he condemned the actions of those who exploited the occasion to commit criminal acts. He warned against using cultural festivities as a cover for fomenting trouble and committing crimes against fellow citizens, as seen in the actions of the ‘Oriokpa’ masqueraders.

The police command has assured the public that all those involved in the assault of law-abiding citizens will be brought to justice. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting cultural traditions while upholding the law and protecting the rights of all citizens. As the investigation continues, the community remains vigilant, and the authorities are committed to ensuring that those responsible for the violence are held accountable.
