SDP accuses Ondo govt of withholding LG allocations

Ondo State chapter of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, has accused the state government of allegedly withholding federal allocations designated for local government councils across the state.

The allegation was contained in a statement issued in Akure on Saturday by the SDP State Chairman, Gbenga Akinbuli, who condemned the practice, describing it as a violation of constitutional provisions and a threat to grassroots governance.

According to Akinbuli, the alleged diversion of funds meant for local councils has hindered the delivery of essential services such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and security at the community level.

“We have credible information that federal allocations meant for local governments are being collected by the state government,” the statement read in part.

“This revelation raises serious concerns about fiscal federalism, local autonomy, and the principles of democracy,” he added.

The party stressed that such action contravenes the constitutional framework which guarantees financial independence for local governments.

It urged the state government to cease the alleged collection and ensure that local councils receive their allocations without interference.

Akinbuli also asserted that continued denial of access to constitutionally allocated funds compromises the ability of local governments to function effectively and deliver public services, adding that it weakens citizens’ confidence in government.

“The people deserve better governance. It is time for the state government to uphold the constitution and respect the rights of local authorities to govern in the interest of their communities,” he said.

The SDP chairman also appealed to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to intervene in the matter.

He argued that persistent disregard for local government autonomy by some state governments, including Ondo, undermines the Federal Government’s commitment to constitutional order and decentralisation.
