Mr. Olawale Okunniyi, Chairman of Contact and Mobilisation/Special Duties for the Obi‑Datti 2023 Presidential Campaign Council, has called on Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to act swiftly against the growing number of election results that are not being uploaded for collation. In a press release issued on Sunday, Okunniyi warned that the trading and falsification of results at collation centres are being facilitated by “unfounded excuses from compromised” INEC officials, who claim that the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) has suddenly stopped functioning for the transmission and collation of results. He identified Lagos and its surrounding areas as hotspots for these troubling incidents.
Okunniyi condemned the ongoing disruptions to result collation and the violence reported in Lagos. He noted that field representatives have reported assaults on Labour Party agents and representatives. Among those affected is the prominent political economist and Convener of the Big Tent, Prof. Pat Utomi, who experienced violence at Lagos collation centres, where heavy sporadic gunfire was reported to prevent the collation of results from polling units under the ruling All Progressives Congress.
