The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally endorsed Auwalu Isah Manzo as its candidate for an upcoming parliamentary by-election in Nigeria’s Jigawa State, following a vetting process conducted ahead of the August 16, 2025, vote. The election for the Garki/Babura Federal Constituency seat was triggered by the death of incumbent lawmaker Isa Dogon Yaro, who passed away in May 2024 at age 46.
Precious Ben, secretary of the PDP’s screening committee, confirmed that Manzo met all eligibility requirements set by the party and Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). A five-member delegation traveled to Jigawa to review his credentials, including documentation of his career and political qualifications. Ben praised Manzo’s experience and public appeal, stating he was “the best candidate” to represent the party and could “compete effectively” against rivals from other political factions.
Manzo, a retired civil servant, told reporters he stepped away from government service to pursue the legislative seat, emphasizing his goal of “bringing change” to the constituency. He expressed confidence in securing voter support, citing his familiarity with local needs. The by-election is expected to draw significant attention, with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) also fielding candidates, according to local media reports.
The vacancy underscores the dynamic nature of Nigeria’s electoral landscape, where by-elections often serve as indicators of shifting political alliances and voter sentiment. While the PDP seeks to retain the seat, observers note the race will test Manzo’s ability to translate his administrative background into grassroots support. INEC has yet to release a detailed timeline for campaigning or candidate registration, but election preparations are underway across the northwestern state.
