Opeyemi Aiyeola: Why I Blocked Nollywood Colleagues After Marriage

In a candid revelation, veteran Nigerian actress Opeyemi Aiyeola has explained her decade-long absence from Nollywood, Africa’s prolific film industry, and her decision to sever contact with colleagues during that period. The actress, known for her roles in iconic Nigerian films, attributed her hiatus to a desire to safeguard her marriage and family life amid concerns about the industry’s perceived pressures on relationships.

Aiyeola, who relocated to the United States after marrying businessman Olayiwola Abdulwakilu over a decade ago, shared the details during an interview with Oyinmomo TV. Her abrupt exit from the public eye and decision to block industry contacts, she explained, stemmed from fears that external influences might destabilize her marriage. “I held my marriage in high esteem, so I blocked everybody’s contact in the industry,” she said. “Some [critics] claim practitioners don’t have stable homes, but they don’t understand what happens behind closed doors. I didn’t want mine to end that way.”

The mother of two emphasized that her break was a deliberate sacrifice to prioritize her family, particularly her sons, during their formative years. “I sacrificed everything for them,” she said, adding that her hiatus also included apologizing to fans for her sudden departure. Her return to acting, she noted, followed a conscious choice to reclaim her career after ensuring her children were older. “I unblocked everyone when I decided to focus on my work again,” she stated. “Now, it’s time to carve my own path.”

Aiyeola’s remarks shed light on broader conversations about balancing personal and professional lives in industries often scrutinized for their impact on relationships. While she did not elaborate on specific challenges faced by peers, her reflection underscores the tension between public careers and private stability in entertainment sectors globally.

Her comeback has reignited interest in her filmography, with fans anticipating new projects. Meanwhile, Aiyeola’s story highlights a rarely discussed aspect of celebrity culture—the personal costs of fame and the measures some take to protect their families. As she resumes her career, her experience offers a nuanced perspective on resilience and reinvention in an industry known for its relentless pace.
