Nigerian farmers say rise in fertiliser price threatens lower food cost

Nigeria’s food price crisis is far from being over, as farmers have continued to lament the rise in fertiliser prices and input costs nationwide.

Media Talk Africa reports that the most used fertilisers in Nigeria are urea, NPK compound fertilisers, and phosphate fertilisers.

Aliyu Kwarbai, a farmer on X, on Sunday lamented that a 50-kilogramme bag of Diammonium Phosphate fertiliser has soared as high as N120,000 from around N50,000 in 2024.

Similarly, he noted that nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) fertiliser has risen to around N55,000 for a 50 kg bag from N23,000 last year.

According to him, the continued rise in the cost of input threatens lower prices of food.

He questioned why Nigerian government agencies are not embarking on measures to mitigate fertiliser price hikes.

“Today, 50 kg of DAP fertiliser is between N110,000 and N120,000, depending on your location.

“A bag of 50 kg NPK 15-15-15 is between N50,000 and N55,000, depending on your location.

“Meanwhile, the output of the farmer has crashed in the market.

“A bag of maize (100 kg) costs between N38,000 and N42,000.

“Brown rice, N30,000–N35,000, depending on its quality. All other farmers’ output is down.

“How are farmers coping with the prices of fertilisers?

“Are the government agencies taking realistic measures to address the hike?” he stated on X.

His comment comes amid a month-on-month rise in Nigeria’s food inflation in June 2025 to 21.97 percent from 21.14 percent in the previous month, despite a drop in headline inflation to 22.97 percent.

As a solution, the Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, Muda Yusuf, called for government fiscal intervention to reduce input costs to cut down on inflation’s impact on Nigerians.
