Doguwa Honors Buhari: Legacy of Leadership and Integrity

A prominent Nigerian lawmaker has honored the late former President Muhammadu Buhari as a principled leader and nation-builder whose policies continue to shape Nigeria’s future. Rep. Ado Doguwa, a senior member of the House of Representatives and leader of the Northern Regional Caucus, issued a heartfelt tribute on Monday, mourning Buhari’s passing as “an irreparable loss” to the country.

Doguwa, who served as Majority Leader during Buhari’s presidency, praised the ex-leader’s integrity and steadfast commitment to governance. Speaking in Abuja, the Kano State lawmaker described Buhari—a former military ruler turned democratically elected president—as a mentor and “a man of rare honesty” whose legacy would endure. “He was resolute in character, steadfast in purpose, and unwavering in his commitment to principles for the greater good of our country,” Doguwa said, emphasizing Buhari’s reputation for dignity and fair leadership.

Highlighting Buhari’s policy achievements, Doguwa noted the former president’s focus on infrastructure development, including investments in rail networks, roads, and energy projects designed to bolster Nigeria’s economy for decades. Though acknowledging that Buhari’s tenure had its challenges, Doguwa underscored his sincerity in pursuing reforms. “Even in his imperfections, he remained an honorable soldier and patriot who believed in justice and the power of good governance,” he stated.

The lawmaker also extended condolences to Buhari’s family, including his widow, Aisha Buhari, and the people of Katsina State, Buhari’s home region. He recognized Katsina Governor Malam Dikko Umar Radda and the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Faruq Umar, while calling for reflection on the late leader’s contributions. “He did not govern for applause,” Doguwa remarked, “but to serve humanity.”

Buhari, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023 after previously ruling as a military head of state in the 1980s, was often praised for his anti-corruption stance and austerity measures, though his administration faced criticism over security challenges and economic inequality. Doguwa’s tribute amplifies a growing recognition of Buhari’s impact on Nigeria’s political and infrastructural landscape, even as debates about his legacy persist.
