Kano govt demands arrest of ex-governor Ganduje

Political analyst Hassan Ibrahim has urged former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to stop interfering in the state’s security affairs and has called on current Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to place residents’ safety above politics. In an interview, Ibrahim warned that Ganduje’s comments—particularly his proposal for a new private security outfit—could worsen the already fragile security environment in Kano.

Ganduje’s plan, allegedly based on a report by Baffa Babba Dan Agundi, claims the current administration dismissed more than 12,000 Hisbah personnel. Ibrahim cautioned that establishing a parallel force could spark clashes with the state‑run Hisbah, diverting attention from pressing threats such as banditry. He noted that Ganduje’s tenure was marked by political thuggery, which may have contributed to the state’s rising insecurity, and cited the ongoing emirship dispute—an issue Ganduje is accused of influencing—as another source of instability.

The analyst emphasized that Governor Yusuf must mobilize all available resources to combat insecurity in Kano. He advised strengthening cooperation with security agencies, including the police, DSS and the military, to address the problem effectively. Ibrahim’s remarks come amid heightened tensions, as the state government recently called for Ganduje’s arrest for allegedly inciting bandits to attack communities. Ganduje denied the accusations, calling them politically motivated and baseless, and launched the sale of registration forms for an independent Hisbah outfit, which he describes as a voluntary, religious and humanitarian organization. Critics, however, view the move as an attempt to undermine the current administration.

As Kano’s security situation continues to deteriorate, Ibrahim’s appeal for both Ganduje and Governor Yusuf to prioritize public safety over political interests has become increasingly urgent. With the state government facing criticism over its handling of the crisis, it remains to be seen how authorities will respond to the growing insecurity and address the underlying causes of the violence.
