The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, has expressed his gratitude to the constituents of the Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in Lagos State for electing him to a sixth term. Gbajabiamila secured his victory in the recent presidential and National Assembly elections held on Saturday, receiving 19,717 votes, which placed him well ahead of his closest rival, Bosun Jeje of the Peoples Democratic Party, who garnered 5,121 votes.
In a statement released on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Lanre Lasisi, Gbajabiamila thanked the people of Surulere for their continued support and assured them that he would not disappoint them in his new term. The statement, titled “Gbajabiamila Salutes Constituents for Historic 6th Term Victory,” highlighted his commitment to bringing more developmental projects to Surulere and beyond.
“I am immensely grateful to the people of Surulere for their overwhelming support. I do not take your support for granted,” Gbajabiamila stated. He emphasized his dedication to protecting the interests of his constituents over the past 20 years and expressed pride in representing them. He also acknowledged the contributions of various supporters, including Surulere APC leaders, party members, community development associations, and residents, stating, “This victory is not mine alone. It is a victory for democracy. Surulere has made history by this sixth mandate given to me, which would definitely spur me to do more for you.”
The statement further noted that Gbajabiamila is the only lawmaker from the South-West geopolitical zone to have been elected six times to represent his constituency. He first entered the House of Representatives in 2003 and has held various leadership positions, including Minority Whip, Minority Leader, and Majority Leader, before being elected as Speaker in 2019. According to the statement, he remains the only lawmaker in Africa to achieve this milestone.
