Kylian Mbappe reached a significant milestone by scoring his 200th goal for Paris Saint-Germain, making him the club’s joint all-time top scorer. The France superstar netted twice in PSG’s 3-0 victory over Ligue 1 title rivals Marseille on Sunday. Both of Mbappe’s goals came at the Velodrome from assists by Lionel Messi, and in between, he set up Messi for PSG’s other goal. This dominant performance against their greatest rivals allowed PSG to move eight points clear at the top of the table, alleviating many doubts about a team that had been struggling in recent weeks.
Mbappe’s brace brought his total to 200 goals in just under 250 appearances since joining PSG from Monaco in 2017, equaling his former teammate Edinson Cavani as the club’s record scorer. Currently, he leads Ligue 1 with 17 goals this season and has scored 29 times in 29 games across all competitions since the start of the campaign. Messi also had a notable performance, scoring 12 league goals and providing 12 assists this season, while the team managed to cope without the injured Neymar, who was sidelined after suffering an ankle injury during last week’s 4-3 defeat of Lille.
Despite ongoing injury issues, including the early departure of centre-back Presnel Kimpembe, who was carried off in pain, PSG took the lead in the 25th minute. Mbappe made a clever run infield from the left, evading Eric Bailly to receive a pass from Messi and score. Just four minutes later, he assisted Messi for the second goal, threading a brilliant pass through Bailly’s legs. Although Messi missed another chance shortly after, both Mbappe and Marquinhos came close to extending the lead before halftime. The third goal came ten minutes into the second half when Messi delivered a perfectly timed assist, allowing Mbappe to volley the ball into the far corner of the net.
In a separate match, Gianluigi Donnarumma made crucial saves, including one from an Alexis Sanchez header, as Marseille suffered their second consecutive home defeat in the league. This result likely dealt a severe blow to their hopes of winning a first league title since 2010. PSG’s impressive display, utilizing a 5-3-2 formation, serves as a significant boost ahead of their Champions League last-16 tie against Bayern Munich on March 8.
Meanwhile, Monaco remains two points behind Marseille in third place after losing 3-0 at home to a revitalized Nice in the Cote d’Azur derby. Nigerian striker Terem Moffi scored twice for Nice and assisted Khephren Thuram for the third goal. Nice has been unbeaten since Didier Digard took over as coach, achieving six wins and two draws in eight matches, which has propelled them into European contention. Monaco’s defeat follows their elimination from the Europa League on penalties by Bayer Leverkusen, leaving them in third place in the table, only ahead of Lens on goal difference.
