NiMet Warns of 3-Day Rain, Thunderstorms, Flash Floods Across Nigeria

NiMet forecasts rain, thunderstorms, flash floods nationwide — Daily Nigerian

Nigerian meteorological authorities have issued a three-day weather alert, warning of thunderstorms, moderate to heavy rainfall, and potential flash floods across multiple regions starting Monday. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) emphasized heightened risks for several northern and central states, urging residents and authorities to prepare for hazardous conditions.

In its Sunday advisory, NiMet outlined scattered thunderstorms across northern states including Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, and Katsina on Monday morning, with sunnier intervals expected elsewhere. By afternoon and evening, storms with moderate rains are forecast to expand to additional areas such as Zamfara, Kebbi, and Taraba. The agency specifically flagged Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano as high-risk zones for flash floods, calling for emergency protocols to be activated.

Central regions, including the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja), Niger, and Plateau States, face cloudy skies transitioning to light or moderate rain throughout Monday. Plateau State remains under particular scrutiny due to an elevated flood risk. Southern areas, from Ondo to Cross River, will see cloudy conditions giving way to rainfall later in the day, with heavier precipitation expected midweek.

Tuesday’s forecast predicts morning thunderstorms over northern states like Adamawa and Gombe, spreading westward to Sokoto and Kebbi by evening. Central regions, including Abuja and Kwara, may experience persistent rainfall, while southern coastal areas such as Rivers and Bayelsa could see moderate showers intensifying after midday.

By Wednesday, the north is expected to witness morning storms in Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto, shifting to Borno and Bauchi later. Central zones face renewed rainfall in Plateau and Benue, with southern states like Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom bracing for moderate to heavy downpours in the afternoon. NiMet cautioned that persistent rains could exacerbate flooding in flood-prone communities.

The agency advised residents in high-risk areas to avoid nonessential travel during storms, secure loose outdoor items, and stay clear of rivers and trees. Vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly, were urged to dress warmly amid cooler nighttime temperatures. Airlines received reminders to consult NiMet’s real-time flight documentation for weather updates.

Nigeria’s rainy season often brings disruptive flooding, particularly in regions with inadequate drainage systems. NiMet’s warnings align with broader climate patterns affecting West Africa, where seasonal rains increasingly test infrastructure and disaster response frameworks. The agency directs the public to its official website for ongoing updates.
