Nigeria Transmission Company records 131 vandalism cases

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has recorded a significant milestone in electricity transmission, achieving an all-time peak of 5,801.84 megawatts on March 4, 2025. Despite facing challenges such as infrastructure vandalism, the company has made notable progress in expanding its capacity and improving grid stability.

In his end-of-year message, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sule Abdulaziz highlighted the company’s achievements, including the commissioning of 82 new power transformers between January 2024 and November 2025. These additions have increased the national grid’s capacity by over 8,500 megavolt-amperes, enhancing reliability and efficiency.

However, Abdulaziz noted that vandalism remains a major concern, with 131 incidents reported across the company’s network between January and November 2025. To address this issue, TCN is working closely with security agencies and community groups to safeguard critical infrastructure.

The company has also advanced several donor-funded projects valued at over $1.16 billion, including the Abuja Feeding Scheme, which involves the construction of five new substations and a new 330kV transmission line. These initiatives aim to modernize the grid, expand capacity, and prepare TCN to meet the energy needs of a growing economy.

Abdulaziz commended the company’s staff for their dedication and expressed gratitude to stakeholders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Power, for their support. Looking ahead to 2026, TCN plans to intensify efforts to increase grid capacity, stability, and efficiency, while deepening collaboration with stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity supply industry.

The record peak achieved in 2025 reflects growing stability and expanded capacity in Nigeria’s power sector, despite persistent challenges. As the backbone of the nation’s electricity transmission, TCN’s progress is crucial for the country’s economic growth and development. With continued investment in infrastructure and collaboration with stakeholders, TCN is poised to play a vital role in Nigeria’s energy future.
