Senators Ishaku Abbo and Binos Yaroe, representing the Adamawa Northern and Southern Senatorial districts respectively, have successfully secured re-election for a second term in the Senate, according to results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the Presidential and National Assembly elections held in Adamawa State. Reverend Binos Yaroe of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) garnered 146,407 votes, defeating Engineer Ismaila Numan of the All Progressive Congress (APC), who received 94,828 votes. The results also indicated that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 2,414 votes, while the Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP) received 9,444, 2,592, 989, and 1,667 votes, respectively.
Senator Abbo, who gained national attention due to a controversial incident involving a sex toy assault, faced a challenging contest but emerged victorious against his closest rival, Reverend Yohanna Amos of the PDP. Reports indicate that Senator Ishaku Abbo, popularly known as SIA, secured 71,927 votes, while Amos garnered 61,895 votes. Following the announcement of Abbo’s victory, there was widespread jubilation in Mubi among his supporters, who viewed the contest as a David versus Goliath battle. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri is believed to have strongly supported Amos, the candidate from his party, in an effort to defeat Abbo. The relationship between Abbo and Fintiri soured after Abbo switched from the PDP to the APC, a decision analysts attribute to an intra-party power struggle that emerged after their electoral success in 2019. This estrangement intensified when Abbo referred to Fintiri as a “small man holding a big office,” following Fintiri’s refusal to grant appointments to some of Abbo’s loyalists in the new administration after the defeat of Governor Jibrilla Bindow of the APC in 2019.
As of this report, the results for the Adamawa Central Senatorial zone are still pending. However, preliminary results from five councils—Yola South, Yola North, Girei, Fufore, and Song—show Senator Abdulaaziz Nyako, son of former Governor Murtala Nyako, trailing the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya-Abbas, by a margin of 30,000 votes. Abbas is expected to secure additional votes from the two remaining council areas, Gombi and Hong, as he hails from Uba in Hong. The results released so far for the presidency and the Federal House of Representatives indicate that the PDP has achieved significant success in both councils. Senator Nyako, who is seeking re-election to represent Adamawa Central in the Senate, previously served from 2015 to 2019 and played a key role in the establishment of the North East Development Commission.
