Nigeria Unveils NIRP for Resolving Labor Disputes

Nigerian Government approves landmark National Industrial Relations Policy to boost labor stability

In a major stride towards improving workplace relations and bolstering the nation’s economy, the Nigerian Federal Government has approved the National Industrial Relations Policy (NIRP). The policy, aimed at reducing industrial disputes and promoting stable labor relations nationwide, was given the green light by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Thursday, chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the announcement following the meeting. He explained that the NIRP serves as a comprehensive framework to guide trade unions, employers, and government agencies. It promotes structured dialogue and aligns Nigeria’s labor practices with international standards, particularly those set by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Idris described the NIRP as a significant step forward in addressing long-standing gaps in Nigeria’s labor management practices. “The policy is designed to ensure smooth workplace operations, strengthen tripartite cooperation among government, employers, and workers, and align Nigeria’s practices with global benchmarks,” he stated.

He highlighted that recurring industrial unrest often arises from the absence of a clear national framework for negotiations, dispute resolution, and collective bargaining. With the NIRP now in place, the government anticipates more predictable, peaceful, and structured labor relations across various sectors.

“The NIRP elevates industrial relations as a national priority that demands immediate and ongoing attention,” Idris emphasized. He further noted that the policy will serve as a definitive reference point for labor laws, union engagement, and conflict resolution in both the public and private sectors.

The approval of the NIRP is expected to boost productivity and enhance investor confidence in Nigeria’s labor environment. By fostering a more cohesive and stable labor relations landscape, the policy is poised to drive economic growth andjob creation.
