PDP Condemns Benue Governor’s Neglect of Legislature, Democracy

PDP flays Benue Assembly’s refusal to honour Gov Alia's correspondence

The Benue State chapter of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised alarms over growing tensions between Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration and the state legislature, citing the Assembly’s failure to address the governor’s recent nominees for commissioner positions as emblematic of a broader governance crisis. In a sharply worded statement issued Saturday, the opposition party accused Alia of fostering an environment of “executive recklessness” and undermining democratic norms by sidelining legislative protocols.

Tim Nyor, the PDP’s publicity secretary, described the unresolved nomination process as part of a “chilling trend” under Alia’s leadership, which he claimed prioritizes intimidation over collaboration. “It is profoundly shameful that governance in Benue has deteriorated into a standoff between branches of government,” Nyor said. He criticized the governor’s approach as “authoritarian” and warned that it risks eroding public trust in democratic institutions.

The dispute centers on the governor’s submission of commissioner appointments to the State House of Assembly, which lawmakers have yet to review or approve. While the governor’s office has not publicly addressed the delay, the PDP framed the inaction as reflective of a systemic disregard for checks and balances. “A functional democracy demands mutual respect between the executive and legislature—one cannot exist without the other,” Nyor added, stressing that the legislature serves as a critical conduit for citizens’ voices.

The party’s statement called on Alia to adopt a more inclusive governance style, urging him to “engage stakeholders constructively” and prioritize dialogue over unilateral decision-making. Nyor emphasized that leadership in a plural society requires tolerance for dissent and collaboration across political divides. “Intimidation has no place in a democracy,” he said. “The people of Benue deserve transparency and accountability, not power struggles that jeopardize their welfare.”

Situated in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region, Benue State has faced recurring political volatility, with past administrations grappling with issues ranging from intercommunal clashes to fiscal challenges. The current impasse adds to concerns about governance stability in the state, which has been under Alia’s leadership since May 2023. The PDP’s critique also extended to the public, urging citizens and lawmakers to “resist any erosion of democratic principles” and hold leaders accountable.

As of publication, Governor Alia’s office had not responded to the PDP’s allegations. Observers note that prolonged friction between the executive and legislative arms could stall policy implementation in a state already contending with economic pressures and security concerns. The situation highlights broader debates in Nigeria about the balance of power in subnational governance, particularly in regions where single-party dominance often tests institutional resilience.
