ADC Kebbi Suspends Leaders Over Abuja Politicians’ Domination

2027: Adamawa ADC calls for united national coalition to defeat APC

The African Democratic Party (ADC) in Kebbi State, Nigeria, has ousted its top leadership amid allegations of unilateral decision-making and external political interference. Party chairman Sufiyanu Bala, deputy Junaidu Muhammed Mudi, and secretary Hauwa Muhammed were suspended with immediate effect following an extraordinary stakeholders’ meeting, according to an official statement issued Tuesday.

Publicity secretary Jamilu Muhammed announced the suspensions during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi, accusing the trio of bypassing executive oversight and enabling undue influence by politicians based in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. He claimed the suspended leaders had “facilitated the domination of Abuja nomadic politicians,” a move fiercely opposed by longstanding party members.

“We will not allow the party’s current structure to be hijacked by outsiders,” Muhammed stated, emphasizing the stakeholders’ resolve to protect the ADC’s local identity. The decision, he explained, followed consultations with loyal members who “have been with the party long before the arrival of Abuja impostors.”

The rift highlights growing tensions between local factions and central political figures within Nigeria’s opposition landscape. Muhammed alleged that Bala’s leadership repeatedly sidestepped procedural norms, including approving party activities without broader consultation. While specifics of the contested decisions were not disclosed, the spokesman framed the suspensions as a corrective measure to restore internal accountability.

The ADC, a minor opposition party active in Nigeria’s northwestern states, has faced challenges in consolidating influence amid competition with dominant political blocs. Critics have often cited external interference as a barrier to grassroots party development in the region.

No immediate responses were reported from the suspended officials, leaving questions about potential counteractions or legal challenges. The development underscores broader struggles within Nigerian politics, where regional parties frequently grapple with balancing local autonomy against national alliances.

As the ADC moves to appoint interim leadership, analysts note the incident could either galvanize support among its base or deepen internal fractures ahead of future elections. The party’s ability to navigate this crisis may shape its credibility as a viable alternative in Kebbi’s evolving political terrain.
