NSCDC Deploys 1,500 Personnel for Kaduna By-Election Security

Authorities in Nigeria’s Kaduna State have mobilized a significant security presence ahead of Saturday’s by-elections in two key constituencies, emphasizing safety and adherence to electoral laws. Commandant Nuhu Bello Dansadau of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) announced the deployment of 1,500 personnel to monitor voting in Zaria and Chikun, areas set to hold polls on August 16, 2025. The decision, disclosed in a statement by NSCDC Public Relations Officer Musa Labaran, aims to safeguard voters, polling stations, and critical infrastructure.

Dansadau, addressing officers at the NSCDC’s Kaduna headquarters on Thursday, stressed the importance of maintaining professionalism and avoiding misconduct that could undermine public trust. Highlighting the corps’ mandate to protect lives and property, he called for vigilance in securing electoral materials and collaboration with other security agencies. “We are fully prepared for a peaceful election,” he said, urging officers to prioritize neutrality and accountability.

Voter participation emerged as a central theme, with Dansadau encouraging residents to cast ballots without fear of intimidation. He assured the public of comprehensive security measures spanning the pre-election, voting, and post-election periods. “Exercise your democratic right lawfully and peacefully,” he added, signaling confidence in the coordinated efforts of security forces to deter disruptions.

The commandant issued a stern warning to potential agitators, including ballot box snatchers and individuals planning violence, vowing to prosecute violations of electoral laws. The NSCDC’s proactive stance reflects broader concerns over past election-related tensions in Nigeria, where security challenges occasionally mar the voting process.

By-elections in Zaria and Chikun, triggered by vacancies in legislative positions, are viewed as a test of stability in Kaduna, a region with a history of localized political disputes. The NSCDC’s deployment aligns with Nigeria’s push to strengthen electoral integrity, particularly in areas prone to logistical or security vulnerabilities. Analysts note that transparent, secure polls in these constituencies could reinforce public confidence in democratic institutions ahead of the country’s next general elections.
