Senate President Ahmad Lawan recently shared how his constituents in Yobe North demonstrated their support for him by making significant sacrifices, including killing cows, camels, and other animals, as well as fasting for his success in regaining the senatorial ticket. He made these remarks on Tuesday while recounting the journey that led to his re-election after an initial setback. According to reports, Lawan was re-elected to the Senate for a fifth term by his constituents in the Yobe North senatorial district, and he emphasized that the credit for this victory belongs to the people of the region.

Lawan recalled the controversy surrounding the Senate seat for Yobe North, which led to a court case. He explained that after a judgment was issued by the Federal High Court in Damaturu in favor of another candidate, he publicly accepted the ruling and decided not to appeal. “I was thoroughly convinced of what I was doing,” he stated, highlighting his belief in the integrity of his decision. However, he noted that the people of Yobe North rallied together, asserting that the Senate seat was not solely his but belonged to them as well. While he was initially reluctant to fight for the seat, his constituents and the All Progressive Congress (APC) party continued to advocate on his behalf.

Lawan acknowledged that while his opinion was respected, his constituents wanted to appeal the court’s decision. The APC at both the state and national levels took up the challenge, although they ultimately lost at the Appeal Court. He expressed gratitude for the support he received, attributing his victory to the sacrifices made by the innocent people of Yobe North. “God has plans for us,” he remarked, referencing the adage that while man proposes, God disposes. He recognized the heartfelt efforts of those who fasted and made sacrifices for his success, including both known and unknown supporters.

He described how the community mobilized to make offerings, with individuals purchasing cows, camels, and sheep to slaughter in his honor. Lawan noted that the outcome of this election was the most favorable he had experienced. After the Supreme Court’s ruling in his favor, he returned home to an emotional reunion with his constituents, many of whom were in tears of joy. “In my entire 20 years, I have never seen this kind of show of love from my people,” he reflected.

The Punch reported that on February 6, 2023, the Supreme Court affirmed Lawan as the APC senatorial candidate for Yobe North, replacing Bashir Machina, who had won the party ticket during the May 28 primary elections. Lawan shared that he campaigned for only two days, Wednesday and Thursday, due to time constraints, yet the community was already mobilized in support of his candidacy. He expressed that the election outcome was the best he had ever experienced, with voter turnout surpassing previous years. “Yobe North people deserve every accolade,” he concluded, emphasizing the importance of their prayers for him to provide the representation that would bring them happiness, as they had made him and his supporters very happy.
