Labour Party ends PDP candidate’s 12 years in Senate

The senatorial candidate of the Labour Party for the Federal Capital Territory in the 2023 election, Ireti Kingibe, has been declared winner of the FCT Senate seat.

The Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission in the FCT, Prof. Sanni Saka of the University of Abuja, announced the result on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to him, Kingibe who is the wife of a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babagana, scored 202,175 votes to emerge the winner.

He added that Philip Aduda of the Peoples Democratic Party came second with 100,544 votes, while Angulu Dobi of the All Progressives Congress took the third position with 78,905 votes.

The result reveals that Aduda, who is one of the longest-serving federal lawmakers in Nigeria, is on his way out of the parliament after losing to Kingibe.

He served two terms in the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2011, and was elected to the Senate for the FCT in 2011 elections, running on the PDP ticket

The Returning Officer while declaring the result said: “I, Prof. Sanni Saka, thereby certify that I am the Returning Officer for the 2023 FCT senatorial district election held on February 25.

“The election was contested and the candidates received the votes as announced.

“That Ireti Kingibe having satisfied the requirements of the law has been declared the winner,” Saka said.

He said that the problem with the Bwari result that was earlier cancelled was rectified and the result certified as valid.

He, however, said that the result for Abaji remained cancelled because the problem had not been sorted out.

Suleiman Ango, the APC agent and the PDP’s Abdulrahman Mohammed refused to sign the result sheet saying it was not authentic.
