Kano Governor Makes Voter Registration Compulsory for Eligible Citizens

Kano State Governor Emphasizes Compulsory Voter Registration for Eligible Citizens

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has declared voter registration a compulsory duty for every eligible citizen in the state, no longer just a civic responsibility. This call to action was made during the inauguration of a 36-member Committee on Voters Registration and Civic Awareness at the governor’s office.

The newly formed committee has been tasked with ensuring that at least 10 million voters are registered in the ongoing nationwide exercise. Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Faruk Umar Ibrahim, emphasized the significance of this assignment, describing it as a “Herculean task” that demands diligence and dedication.

Ibrahim highlighted the committee’s pivotal role in monitoring polling units across the state, guaranteeing that citizens collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). He also urged the committee to work closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the availability of voter cards.

Kano State is currently the most populous state in the federation, boasting high political awareness among its citizens. Ibrahim expressed his expectation for those previously disenfranchised to capitalize on this opportunity, emphasizing that Governor Yusuf is committed to the process. According to Ibrahim, only through comprehensive voter registration can Kano elect leaders who embody integrity and a passion for development.

Malam Ibrahim Waiya, the committee’s chairman and Commissioner for Information, responded to the governor’s charge, stating that the team views this assignment as a call to service. The committee is poised to work tirelessly to achieve the set goals and empower the citizens of Kano State to exercise their fundamental right to vote.

This drive for voter registration underscores the importance of active citizen participation in the democratic process. As the most populous state in the federation, Kano’s electoral outcomes significantly impact the nation’s overall political landscape. By emphasizing compulsory voter registration, Governor Yusuf aims to ensure that every eligible citizen has a voice in shaping the state’s future.
