APGA Dismisses Sabotage Allegations in Anambra By-Election

End APGA’s 19-year rule in Anambra - APC chieftain tells youths

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has refuted claims of sabotage and voter intimidation during the Anambra by-election held on August 16. According to the party’s National Chairman, Sly Ezokenwa, the election was one of the most credible exercises conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, Ezokenwa addressed the allegations made by opposition parties. He stated that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the All Progressives Congress (APG) were unhappy with the outcome of the election due to their lack of structures, which led to their defeat at the polls.

Regarding the claims that Governor Chukwuma Soludo and APGA deployed security personnel to intimidate voters, Ezokenwa pointed out that a senior police officer had announced before the election that only conventional security agencies would be allowed to function during the exercise. This clarification suggests that the security presence was part of the standard electoral process.

The Anambra by-election was closely watched, and the allegations of sabotage and intimidation had raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. However, APGA’s National Chairman insisted that the election was free and fair, with the party’s victory reflecting the will of the people.

The dismissive stance of APGA towards the opposition’s claims underscores the tense political climate in the region. As the electoral process continues to evolve, it is essential to ensure the credibility and transparency of elections to maintain public trust.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been working to improve the electoral process, and the Anambra by-election is seen as a test case for the commission’s efforts. The outcome of the election and the subsequent reactions from political parties will likely have implications for future elections in the region.

With the electoral process being closely monitored by local and international observers, the significance of the Anambra by-election extends beyond the region. The lessons learned from this exercise will inform strategies for improving the credibility and integrity of elections in the country, ultimately contributing to the consolidation of democracy.
