Impending assault on Gaza City sparks mass exodus and deepens humanitarian fears

Israel is preparing a major military operation in Gaza, prompting hundreds of Palestinian families to flee southward amid warnings of a humanitarian catastrophe. The Israeli military has instructed civilians to move toward designated humanitarian zones—including the towns of Deir al‑Balah and Zawaida and the coastal area of Muwasi—but these locations are already overcrowded and lack adequate food, sanitation, and medical care.

The impending operation aims to target Hamas’s stronghold in Gaza City, which Israel says houses a network of tunnels and command centers. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that the assault could lead to the city’s destruction, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the goal to “reclaim” the city and deliver a decisive blow to the militant group.

Gaza’s situation is dire: 2.3 million people are displaced, much of the territory lies in ruins, and international aid agencies caution that the conflict, combined with Israeli restrictions on aid, has pushed the population to the brink of famine. The United Nations has declared a state of famine, a claim Israel dismissed as an “outright lie.” Nevertheless, widespread starvation and a collapsed healthcare system are evident.

Ceasefire negotiations have stalled, and the looming offensive raises concerns about the fate of hostages still held in Gaza. It is believed that 20 hostages taken during Hamas’s October 7 attack may have survived, while another 30 are thought to be deceased. Families fear that a high‑intensity urban battle could jeopardize any remaining hostages’ lives.

As ground troops gather and families continue to flee, the international community watches with concern. A potential assault on Gaza City could dramatically worsen the humanitarian crisis and trigger catastrophic consequences. The conflict, now in its ninth month, has seen repeated cycles of violence and displacement. The humanitarian situation remains precarious, and global actors are urging all parties to exercise restraint and pursue a peaceful resolution. Whether a ceasefire can be negotiated or the conflict will further escalate, deepening Palestinian suffering, remains uncertain.
