The United States has approved a $32.5 million funding release to the World Food Programme (WFP) in Nigeria to provide critical food assistance and nutrition support to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the country’s North‑East and North‑West regions. The US embassy in Nigeria announced the contribution on its website, noting that the funds will enable WFP to deliver essential food aid to approximately 764,205 beneficiaries across conflict‑affected areas.

The assistance program will also include complementary nutrition top‑ups for 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, as well as 43,235 children, using electronic food vouchers. Ongoing insecurity in parts of Nigeria has displaced millions, leaving many at risk of food shortages. The North‑East and North‑West regions have been especially hard hit, with numerous individuals relying on external aid to meet basic nutritional needs.

WFP Nigeria will use the $32.5 million to implement its food assistance and nutrition support programs, focusing on the most vulnerable populations, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, and other displaced individuals. The electronic voucher system will allow beneficiaries to access essential food items, helping to alleviate hunger and malnutrition.

This significant funding reinforces the US government’s commitment to humanitarian efforts in Nigeria, particularly in regions affected by conflict and insecurity. As the situation evolves, the international community’s response will remain crucial in addressing the ongoing food‑security challenges faced by IDPs, and the US contribution represents a critical step toward mitigating food shortages and promoting stability in the region.
