The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will present the certificate of return to the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, and the Vice President-elect, Kashim Shettima, on Wednesday. This announcement follows the declaration of Tinubu as the President-elect during the early hours of Wednesday. Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, secured his position by polling 8,794,726 votes in the 2023 presidential election.
The INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the official announcement at the International Collation Centre in Abuja. He stated, “That Tinubu Bola Ahmed of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.” Tinubu emerged victorious over other candidates, including Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party. The top three candidates each won in 12 states, while Kwankwaso managed to secure only Kano State.
Following the declaration, Yakubu explained that the commission would present the certificate of return to Tinubu and Shettima at the International Collation Centre in Abuja. This timing is intended to provide the commission with sufficient opportunity to prepare for the upcoming governorship election scheduled for March 11. While Tinubu and Shettima will receive their certificates, Yakubu noted that senators and House of Representatives members-elect will need to wait for further information. He indicated that the commission would issue a statement later in the day regarding the timing of the ceremony for the elected legislators.
