Nollywood actress May Edochie has initiated legal proceedings against her former lawyer, Emeka Ugwuonye, alleging cyberbullying, defamation, and cyberstalking. Through her legal representatives, Graylaw Partners, May issued a cease-and-desist notice citing repeated damaging social media posts by Ugwuonye. The notice claims these actions not only defamed her character but also posed a threat to her safety through ridicule, harassment, and malicious attacks.
According to the letter, Ugwuonye’s publications have caused severe and irreparable harm to May’s reputation and safety. The notice states, “These posts are a calculated assault on our client’s reputation and have further imperiled her safety through malicious threats and false allegations.” Furthermore, it alleges that Ugwuonye has encouraged third parties to amplify these harmful communications, exacerbating the situation.
May’s demands include an immediate halt to all defamatory publications, retraction of existing posts, and a public apology across all Ugwuonye’s platforms. Additionally, she is seeking ₦1 billion in damages as compensation for the alleged harm caused by Ugwuonye’s actions. The notice warns that failure to comply with these demands could result in further legal proceedings.
This development comes as a significant step in May’s efforts to protect her reputation and safety in the face of alleged online harassment. The incident highlights the growing concern of cyberbullying and defamation in the digital age, particularly among public figures. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Ugwuonye will respond to the cease-and-desist notice and the damages claim. The outcome of this case may have implications for the regulation of online content and the protection of individuals from cyberbullying and defamation in Nigeria and beyond.
