Tambuwal Denies Betraying Wike in PDP Presidential Primary

Sokoto South Senator Aminu Tambuwal has clarified his relationship with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, describing him as a friend. This statement comes amidst speculation about the events surrounding the 2022 presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). During the primary, Tambuwal stepped down and threw his support behind former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, which ultimately led to Abubakar emerging as the party’s flag bearer.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Tambuwal addressed the issue directly, stating that he would readily give Wike his personal phone if requested, underscoring their friendly relationship. He denied any betrayal of Wike, explaining that their discussions prior to the presidential convention were clear. According to Tambuwal, Wike had indicated his intention to run, and it was understood that Tambuwal was also a candidate. He emphasized that betrayal would imply a violation of a mutual understanding, which he claimed did not exist in this scenario.

The events of the 2022 PDP presidential primary were pivotal, with several candidates vying for the party’s nomination. The decision by Tambuwal to step down and support Abubakar significantly influenced the outcome, contributing to Abubakar’s selection as the party’s candidate. Despite the political maneuverings, Tambuwal’s assertion of friendship with Wike highlights the complexities of political relationships, where alliances and rivalries can coexist.

Tambuwal’s clarification is significant, given the intense speculation and analysis that followed the primary. It underscores the importance of understanding the nuances of political interactions, where personal relationships can play a crucial role in shaping outcomes. As political developments continue to unfold, the dynamics between key figures like Tambuwal and Wike will remain under scrutiny, with their friendship being a notable aspect of the political landscape.
