The Canadian province of British Columbia announced on Tuesday that it will provide free prescription contraceptives for all residents, marking a first in the country. This initiative comes at a time when women’s rights are facing significant challenges in the neighboring United States. Starting April 1, individuals covered by health insurance will be able to obtain contraceptives at no cost upon presenting a prescription, as stated by the province’s finance minister, Katrine Conroy.
Conroy emphasized the importance of reproductive rights, declaring, “When it comes to essentials, having full control over your reproductive rights is at the top of the list. All too often, these fundamental rights are under attack.” She assured the provincial parliament that British Columbia would not follow this trend, stating, “Not here in B.C. The days of passing down these costs to women and trans and non-binary people are coming to an end.” The contraceptive methods that will be covered include most hormonal pills, implants, injections, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and the morning-after pill.
Conroy described the initiative as a significant victory for health and gender equity in the province. The government of British Columbia estimates that individuals who require birth control pills, which typically cost around Can$25 ($18) per month, could save up to Can$10,000 over their lifetime under the new regulations. This move aligns British Columbia with several European countries, such as France, Britain, and Germany, which already offer partial or universal subsidies for contraception. The decision to enhance reproductive rights in Canada follows the recent Supreme Court ruling in the United States that overturned women’s right to abortion.
