The Zamfara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) claim that Governor Dauda Lawal is sponsoring bandits. In a statement released on Saturday, PDP Publicity Secretary Haliru Andi called the allegations unfounded and lacking merit, describing them as a diversionary tactic. He argued that the APC itself presided over a period of heightened banditry during former Governor Bello Matawalle’s tenure, when villages were frequently attacked and security funds were allegedly misappropriated. Andi further alleged that APC leaders engaged with bandit commanders, granting them legitimacy while the people of Zamfara suffered losses.
In contrast, the PDP asserts that Governor Lawal has taken concrete steps to address insecurity since assuming office. Inheriting a severe crisis, Lawal has worked to rebuild confidence, equip security agencies and establish Community Protection Guards (CPG). The party urged residents to disregard the APC’s claims and emphasized Lawal’s commitment to ending banditry in Zamfara.
These allegations and counter‑allegations arise amid ongoing concerns about insecurity in the state, which has faced significant banditry‑related loss of life and displacement of communities. The PDP’s response highlights deep‑seated political tensions in Zamfara, where accusations of complicity in banditry have become a point of contention between the ruling party and the opposition. As the state navigates this complex security landscape, the government’s efforts to restore peace and stability will be closely watched by residents and international observers alike.
