Afrobeats singer Folarin Odunlami, known professionally as Fola, recently opened up about a difficult episode from his early days in Lagos. In an interview with The Beat 99.9 FM Lagos, he recalled being arrested and spending a night in a police station on the very day he moved to the city in 2018. The experience was demoralising and nearly caused him to abandon his musical ambitions, but his resilience helped him adapt to Lagos’s demanding lifestyle.

Despite that initial hardship, Fola has thrived in the city’s vibrant music scene. His breakthrough arrived in October 2024 when he signed with Dagbani Republik, the label owned by renowned singer Bella Shmurda. His debut single, “Alone,” attracted considerable attention and led to collaborations with prominent Afrobeats artists such as Wizkid and Kizz Daniel. These partnerships have further elevated his profile and introduced his music to a wider audience.

Fola’s journey underscores the challenges faced by emerging artists in Lagos, a city famed for its competitive music industry. His ability to persevere and seize opportunities has enabled him to make a name for himself in the Afrobeats genre. With a growing reputation, he is poised to continue making waves both locally and internationally. As the genre gains worldwide popularity and more Nigerian artists achieve global recognition, Fola’s story highlights the importance of determination and adaptability for success. His ongoing releases and collaborations are expected to expand his fan base, contributing to Afrobeats’ increasing global influence.
