The Lagos State Government swiftly addressed a hazardous open manhole on the Ikeja axis leading to Murtala Muhammed International Airport after a viral video sparked public outcry. Repairs were completed in less than 24 hours, demonstrating the administration’s prompt response to safety concerns.
Olufemi Daramola, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu on Infrastructure, said relevant agencies were mobilized overnight to rectify the problem. He visited the site on Sunday and confirmed that the Lagos State Public Works Corporation, the drainage team and other officials worked together to eliminate the risk. “We commend the citizen who raised the alarm, and as soon as it was brought to our attention we took immediate action,” Daramola said.
The open manhole had become a serious danger after broadcast journalist Deji Badmus narrowly avoided an accident there. On Saturday, Badmus erected a warning billboard inside the manhole, describing it as “a death trap” and noting that several cars had already fallen into the uncovered pit, which had been left exposed for about three months. Following Badmus’s civic action, officials covered the manhole by Sunday afternoon.
Daramola cautioned residents against road vandalism and misuse of public infrastructure, citing recent incidents of manhole damage at the Ogudu Bridge and Ogudu Link Bridge. He emphasized the importance of citizen reporting, stating, “While government will continue to respond swiftly, we must emphasize that road abuse is a serious offence.”
The rapid government response underscores the value of public awareness and civic engagement in maintaining infrastructure. Badmus warned that many other open manholes remain scattered across the city and hopes authorities will apply the same urgency to those hazards. The Lagos State Government’s actions demonstrate its commitment to public safety and to addressing citizen concerns.
