Nigerian airlines to face sanctions for flight disruptions

The Nigerian Federal Government has instructed the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to sanction airlines that disrupt flights without valid reasons. This directive aims to ensure efficient operations and high service standards across the industry.

Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, warned that the authority will no longer tolerate situations where airline staff abandon passengers, leaving NCAA consumer‑protection officers to deal with angry customers. While the challenges faced by operators in Nigeria’s unique operating environment are understood, airlines must still adhere to regulations and provide quality service. Exposing NCAA officials to unnecessary risks while supporting airlines and protecting passengers’ rights is unacceptable, Achimugu said. He confirmed that the authority will apply the fullest measures possible for sanctionable infractions, in line with the Federal Government’s instructions.

The NCAA has also been directed to “name and shame” airlines that fail to comply with regulations, particularly in cases of disruption. This approach will commence immediately, as mandated by the Federal Government and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, underscoring the government’s commitment to prioritizing passenger safety and rights.

By holding airlines accountable, the NCAA aims to promote a culture of responsibility and adherence to regulations within the aviation industry. The decision to sanction non‑compliant airlines seeks to balance operators’ needs with passengers’ rights. As the regulatory body overseeing Nigeria’s aviation sector, the NCAA plays a crucial role in maintaining high standards of safety and service. A firm stance on disruptions and non‑compliance is intended to enhance the overall flying experience and bolster the reputation of the country’s aviation industry.
