Former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi has responded to allegations made by Chidi Wihioka, claiming that he denied the state the opportunity to host the Dangote Refinery. According to Amaechi, Dangote had already begun constructing his refinery in Lagos State when he visited Port Harcourt. Amaechi stated that the purpose of Dangote’s visit was to request land for a gas plant, not a refinery as Wihioka alleged.
Amaechi’s response comes after concerned citizens expressed concern over his initial silence on the matter, which was raised by Wihioka on national television. Wihioka, a former federal lawmaker, claimed that Amaechi’s personal demands were the reason Dangote chose not to locate the refinery in Rivers State. However, Amaechi maintained that he willingly provided Dangote with a suitable location opposite the Onne Seaport for his gas plant construction and did not ask for anything in return.
Rivers elders, including Chief Bob Wali, had urged Amaechi to address the allegations. In a statement, Amaechi explained that he had shown Dangote a befitting place for the gas plant, but the businessman never returned to commence construction. Amaechi emphasized that he never made any personal demands from Dangote, contradicting Wihioka’s claims.
The controversy surrounds the decision by Dangote to locate his refinery in Lagos State, rather than Rivers State. Wihioka’s allegations suggested that Amaechi’s personal interests played a role in the decision. However, Amaechi’s account indicates that Dangote’s plans for the refinery were already underway in Lagos before his visit to Port Harcourt.
The dispute has sparked interest among citizens, who are eager to understand the circumstances surrounding the refinery’s location. As the matter continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the controversy will be resolved. For now, Amaechi’s response has provided an alternative perspective on the allegations, highlighting the need for clarity and accuracy in public discourse. The development has significant implications for the economic and industrial landscape of Rivers State and the surrounding region.
