The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is poised to contest the 2027 general elections in Nigeria, despite concerns raised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the party’s leadership registration. According to former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung, the ADC has been a registered political party in Nigeria for over 19 years and is currently undergoing a transition with new coalition partners being incorporated.
INEC had previously stated that the ADC had not fulfilled the necessary requirements to formally recognize Senator David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as National Chairman and National Secretary, rendering all documents signed by them invalid. However, Dalung assured that the matter is being resolved, emphasizing that the party is working to comply with INEC’s legal obligations.
Dalung addressed claims made by the ADC’s 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, that the party had been hijacked by outsiders, stating that Kachikwu’s candidacy in the last election does not grant him a position within the party’s organs. Dalung noted that while Kachikwu is entitled to his opinions, referring to other members in derogatory terms is inappropriate.
Regarding INEC’s concerns over specimen signatures of the new leadership, Dalung revealed that the issue is nearing resolution. He expressed optimism that the ADC will serve as a credible alternative to the ruling party in 2027, citing the party’s activities across the country as evidence that Nigerians can count on them to provide a viable option.
The ADC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections are significant, given the party’s long history in Nigerian politics. As the country approaches the next election cycle, the ADC’s ability to navigate internal challenges and procedural requirements will be crucial in determining its viability as a political force. With the party’s leadership working to address INEC’s concerns, Nigerians can expect further developments in the coming days. The outcome of these efforts will likely have implications for the country’s political landscape, as the ADC seeks to establish itself as a credible alternative to the ruling party.
