Angola cultural exchange program completes successfully

The William O. Lockridge Community Foundation has successfully completed an international educational and cultural exchange program in Luanda, Angola. Four students from Washington, DC, participated in the program as WOLCF International Ambassadors, representing Wards 7 and 8. The ambassadors, Maegan Godoy, Carlone Leach, Taylor Muie, and Cire Wilson, visited Angola from July 19 to 28, engaging in activities designed to promote global awareness, leadership skills, and cultural ties between the United States and Angola.

During their visit, the ambassadors met with officials at the U.S. Embassy in Luanda, learning about diplomatic relations, foreign policy, and careers in international service. They also toured the National Parliament, gaining insight into Angola’s legislative process and political structure. A basketball exchange with a professional athlete showcased the unifying power of sports, while a visit to the Slavery Museum deepened their understanding of the transatlantic slave trade.

The ambassadors also learned about the legacy of Queen Nzinga Mbande, a 17th-century warrior queen who resisted Portuguese colonization and the Atlantic slave trade. They visited the Congo and Ndongo Kingdoms, experiencing Angola’s rich heritage and meeting with the King of the Ndongo Kingdom. These activities aimed to empower the young leaders to see themselves as global citizens and build bridges of understanding between cultures.

This was the fifth delegation visit organized by the WOLCF, with previous destinations including Cameroon, Ghana, Benin, and Madagascar. The foundation remains committed to providing life-changing opportunities for youth from underrepresented communities, ensuring they have the tools, experiences, and confidence to lead in a globally connected world. Through its International Ambassadors Program, students return home inspired, informed, and ready to share their experiences with peers and community.

The WOLCF’s efforts to promote cultural exchange and global awareness are significant, as they provide young people with valuable experiences and skills that can benefit their communities and societies at large. As the foundation continues to organize such programs, it is likely to have a positive impact on the lives of many young people, empowering them to become active global citizens and leaders.
