US President Trump to skip G20 summit in Johannesburg

The upcoming G20 summit in Johannesburg will proceed without U.S. President Donald Trump, who has chosen to send Vice President J.D. Vance in his place. This decision follows strained relations between Trump and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the summit’s host. Their tensions were evident during a meeting at the White House earlier this year, when Trump reiterated unfounded allegations of genocide against white farmers in South Africa—a claim Ramaphosa’s government has consistently denied, asserting that the violence against farmers is not racially motivated.

U.S.–South Africa relations have further deteriorated, with Washington suspending financial aid and imposing a 30 percent tariff on South African exports. Trump has also criticized South Africa’s stance on the Israel‑Hamas conflict, and in March the United States expelled South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool after he criticized the president. Meanwhile, the Afrikaans trade union Solidariteit plans to travel to the United States in September to discuss racial‑redress laws and trade agreements with the State Department.

Despite Trump’s absence, South African officials have welcomed Vice President Vance’s participation, emphasizing that the summit’s success depends on substantive discussions rather than the presence of any single leader. The G20, comprising the world’s largest economies—including 19 countries plus the European and African Unions—will focus on global economic policies under this year’s theme of Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability. This marks the first time the summit is held on the African continent.

The gathering will provide a platform for world leaders to address pressing issues such as economic growth, trade, and sustainable development. With Vice President Vance representing the United States, the summit is expected to emphasize constructive dialogue and cooperation among participating nations. The outcomes will be closely watched for their potential to shape global economic policies and foster international collaboration, outlining the next steps for worldwide economic cooperation as the international community convenes in Johannesburg.
